With the support of the Friends of the Library and a microgrant from AARP, the Chesapeake Public Library is launching a three-part disaster preparedness series designed specifically for seniors. The program reflects how libraries extend their impact beyond traditional services by addressing real-world community needs.

Seniors are often among the most vulnerable during natural disasters, especially hurricanes, which are a regular concern in our region. Challenges such as limited mobility, reliance on medications, and the risk of isolation mean that preparation is especially critical. By hosting these workshops, the library is taking an active role in ensuring older adults have the knowledge, tools, and confidence to respond to emergencies.

The series consists of three sessions:

  • Hurricane Ready introduces steps to take before a storm, including understanding forecasts, identifying evacuation zones, and assembling a preparedness plan. To provide the most accurate and timely information, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service will join this session to explain how storms are tracked and what forecasts mean for residents.
  • When It Strikes: During and After an Emergency addresses what happens during a disaster and the immediate aftermath. Seniors will learn how to remain safe, stay informed, and protect themselves and their homes while navigating the challenges of disrupted services and communication. Subject matter experts from the Office of Emergency Management will lead this session, ensuring participants gain authoritative guidance on local safety protocols.
  • The Aftermath: Resources and Recovery focuses on long-term recovery. Topics include safe cleanup practices, performing essential safety checks, and connecting with local and national resources for assistance. Experts from the Office of Emergency Management will again be available to discuss how to access recovery resources and community support after a storm.

To encourage participation, attendees at each session will be entered into a raffle to win a fully stocked emergency kit. The kit, stored in a durable container, includes essentials such as a flashlight, whistle, weather radio, water filter, pet first aid kit, and heavy-duty garbage bags—practical items that reinforce the lessons shared during the workshops.

Workshops will be hosted at the Chesapeake Central Library with a virtual option available. These sessions will be recorded for later broadcast at all our locations. While the classes are built on one another, they are designed so participants can attend individually if needed. This flexible structure helps the program reach the widest audience possible.

The outcomes extend well beyond knowledge. Participants will leave with practical tools, reduced anxiety, and stronger peer connections. They are also likely to share what they learn with neighbors and caregivers, strengthening resilience across the community.

For staff, the program serves as a model for mission-driven outreach—identifying a need, securing funding, and delivering expert-led services that make a tangible difference. It demonstrates how libraries can leverage partnerships and trusted spaces to support vulnerable populations in life-saving ways.

Ultimately, these workshops go beyond safety tips. They equip seniors with confidence, community connections, and a clear path to recovery, showing the impact libraries achieve when programs are aligned with local needs and strengthened by partnerships.
