The Library of Virginia maintains the most comprehensive collection of information about Virginia’s history, culture, and government. We hold more than 200 million manuscript items, digital images, and records in our archives that tell countless stories of Virginians and our collective past. In addition to state and local government records, LVA has an unparalleled collection of private papers that includes records of businesses, organizations, churches, and individuals. These archival collections continue to grow, and archivists are constantly acquiring and processing records to make them accessible to the public. Four times a year, we publish reports of newly accessioned records. The reports can be found by visiting LVA’s News & Press Center.

Birth of a Planet Documentary and Records
Birth of a Planet documentary, produced by Tilt Creative + Production, LLC, detailing the life and career of John Mitchell Jr. (1863-1929), editor of the African American newspaper the Richmond Planet. Includes documentary, promotional and trailer videos, and video on the creation of the John Mitchell, Jr., mural in Richmond by Hamilton Glass. Also contains promotional posters and t-shirt, multiple editions of the documentary script, and records of the creation and production of the documentary, including photographs. United States Colored Troops, 2nd Regiment. Company G Receipt Roll
Receipt roll, 31 August 1863, for the United States Colored Troops, 2nd Regiment, Company G, contains the first members of the regiment. Names of soldiers were recorded in the left-hand column. As most soldiers were illiterate, their names were entered for them in the signature column, over which they marked their “X.” J. C. Reinhardt witnessed all of the X’s. The receipt documents items of clothing received. Purchased. (54154)
The 2nd Regiment, United States Colored Troops was organized at Arlington, Virginia, from June to November 1863, and then assigned to Department of the Gulf in December 1863.
